Memecoin · the discarded name

They wanted to call it
Realcoin.

Before Tether became Tether, the project was named Realcoin. This coin takes back the name the founders chose in 2014 — and then threw away.

The name Tether didn’t want to keep

Realcoin is announced

Brock Pierce, Reeve Collins, and Craig Sellars introduce Realcoin: a dollar-backed token built on the Mastercoin / Omni protocol on top of Bitcoin. The idea: put the dollar on-chain — one Realcoin should equal one US dollar.

The first tokens are issued

The first units are minted on the Bitcoin blockchain via Omni. Technically, this is already the core of what later becomes USDT and dominates crypto liquidity.

Rebranded to “Tether”

CEO Reeve Collins announces that Realcoin is now Tether. The reason: they didn’t want to sound like just another altcoin. “Tether” was meant to describe a digital tie to a real-world currency — to tether means to bind or fasten.

From Realcoin to the largest stablecoin

Bitfinex lists USDT. The original name disappears from the brand. Tether becomes the liquidity engine of crypto. Realcoin is left as a footnote — until this memecoin opens it again.

“We’re not an altcoin, we’re not our own blockchain. We’re a service, a token that represents dollars.”

The meme

The name was too real.

In 2014, “Realcoin” sounded like one more coin among many. So they renamed it — away from the word coin, toward a verb that promised stability.

The joke sits right there: the token that would later move hundreds of billions was not allowed to be called Realcoin. This memecoin takes the discarded name back — with no peg, no reserve claim, and no pretence of being Tether.
